INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Want to expand your volunteer experience and gain in-depth knowledge in the operation of a social-service agency? If so, an Alternatives to Violence internship may be for you!

Interns have available a wide opportunity of ways to be involved beyond (and in addition to) staffing the 24-hour crisis hotline. From working on a variety of projects including the preparation of outreach materials and assisting with client paperwork, interns have the opportunity to provide child advocacy (and sometimes co-facilitation) at support groups, occasionally assist shelter staff in a variety of tasks, provide transportation for clients, and more. As an additional bonus, interns can frequently arrange to earn (often upperdivision) class credit for their time in areas of study such as sociology, psychology, and criminal justice studies!

During the application process we identify what areas/programs each advocate would be most interested in. You get to choose your emphasis; whether it's domestic violence, sexual assault, or even technology safety we can structure your internship around your skills and interests. Occasionally, it might be possible for interns to receive the additional legal advocacy training that would allow them to assist ATVP's Legal Advocate in providing services (this is subject to need and availability of staff for the training required). Our internship program offers a wide range of opportunities within the scope of our activities.  If accepted for an internship, students will work with the Volunteer and Intern Coordinator to design a program of mutual benefit.  Opportunities are available for internships on an ongoing basis.  In order to provide direct client services, interns must complete our 40-45 hour advocate training.  Preference for internships is always given to current volunteer advocates.  If you are interested in interning with ATVP, please contact us, or fill out an application.

ATVP Media Intern

Application

Project descriptions

The ATVP Media Intern is an unpaid internship. The intern will be required to complete the advocate hotline training and volunteer on the hotline, just as any other advocate for our agency. Training will run from September 17 – October 6. This means that the intern will do direct client services for victims of domestic and sexual violence, stalking and general crimes.  Additionally, the intern will serve 6-10 hours in the office where their primary focus will be to analyze local media representations of crime and crime victims, record and document media coverage, and help the agency increase the effectiveness of their media outreach. Eventually the intern will compose and submit letters to the editor and press releases. Applicants should complete the advocate volunteer application on the ATVP website at www.atvp.org. To apply for the internship, attach a completed Media Intern Application to the advocate application. For questions or concerns, applicants can contact Tiffany at (509) 332-0552 ext 123 or outreach@atvp.org.
